If you enjoy visual novels that prioritize choices and world exploration over continuous action, Not Involved offers a rather different experience. You play as a doctor who receives a letter from an old friend, Amari, and embarks on a journey through a land decaying by disease, strange creatures, and unexplained secrets. Each location, each conversation, and each decision prompts you to ask questions rather than immediately provide answers.

How to Play Not Involved

For most of the time, players will read dialogue, explore the environment, and make choices that determine the course of the story. Many seemingly small decisions can affect subsequent chapters or lead to different endings.

Controls

  • Mouse: Select dialogue and interact.
  • Space/Enter: Continue the dialogue.
  • ESC: Open the menu.

What makes Not Involved different from typical visual novels?

The most interesting aspect of the game isn't Amari's storyline, but rather how the world operates. One of the most memorable ideas is the memory-trading system. Traveling in giant worms requires the player to give up a memory of their own. The game doesn't treat this as a simple cutscene but uses it to pose the question: what truly makes a person if memories can be taken piece by piece?

That idea continues throughout as the character begins to doubt themselves, while the player is no longer sure what is true.

Instead of explaining everything immediately, Not Involved constantly introduces strange creatures and characters and lets the player piece together the information. The worms that use memories as "travel fees," the kind skeletons that tend the fields, or the talking birds all make the world feel both strange and believable in a unique way.

Not Involved Features

  • A branching storyline with many choices affecting the plot.
  • The dark fantasy world has a strong identity rather than relying solely on horror elements.
  • Many strange characters with suggestive dialogue rather than explanatory.
  • Puzzles and choices are naturally integrated into the storyline.
  • Pixel art combined with character portraits creates the feel of an illustrated novel.

Not Involved's appeal lies in the feeling that each step reveals a small piece of the world, but at the same time deepens the mystery. If you enjoy games where reading dialogue is just as engaging as exploring the map, and love worlds built on symbolism, allusions, and subtle details, Not Involved is a visual novel well worth experiencing. Another interesting game is Five Nights at Hyun's Dojo, which is also very captivating.
