The Kid At The Back is a visual novel that blends psychological, romantic, and mystery elements. You play as a female student at Olympia University. Initially, everything revolves around classes, assignments, and everyday college life. However, behind this peaceful atmosphere lies a story full of secrets, as you must choose between two romantic interests and gradually uncover the true identity of the "boy sitting at the back of the class."
The story begins after a Literature class, when the professor assigns a two-page analysis of Annabel Lee's poem. As class ends, the sky turns gray, signaling an impending rain, while the protagonist realizes she forgot her umbrella.
As you prepare to leave class, you are invited to lunch with Britney, a rather awkward girl. The clumsy invitation creates an awkward atmosphere, but Crow, your only close friend, quickly appears to rescue you. From here, the player encounters Daryl, Gio, and Jess, each with their own distinct personality.
In your freshman year of college, you had almost no friends and were constantly kept at a distance. Crow was the only one who persistently approached you. After risking his life to protect you from a school violence incident, the two became close friends, and Crow promised never to get into fights again. As the group heads to the cafeteria, a friendship meter appears between Crow and "The Kid At The Back," indicating that the player's choices will directly affect the storyline.
The Kid At The Back is a visual novel focused on reading dialogue and making decisions. Players choose how to react in conversations, decide who to go with, which characters to support, and build relationships with each person. Each choice changes the friendship score, opening up different storylines and endings.
The characters are very naturally developed. Everyday conversations, from Britney's awkward lunch invitation to Crow's quiet concern, contribute to the authenticity of the relationships.
The game's atmosphere is also cleverly crafted. From the opening poem, the sky before the rain, the empty classroom, to the crowded cafeteria, everything feels like a normal college life. This very ordinariness makes the later secrets and yandere elements even more terrifying.
The Kid At The Back offers an emotionally rich visual novel experience with a slow-paced yet captivating storyline. Thanks to its well-developed characters, the game will keep you curious about the true identity of the student sitting at the back of the class and the secrets waiting to be uncovered.
