Undertale is a classic pixel-style adventure RPG, famous for its mechanics that allow players to decide how to interact with the world. Instead of just fighting to win, players can choose to forgive, talk, or find a way to reconcile with enemies. Undertale's unique feature is its decision-saving system: actions in the first playthrough still impact subsequent playthroughs, making each choice have lasting meaning.

Undertale's Opening Story

The game begins when a child falls down a legendary mountain—where humans and monsters once lived together in the past. This mountain is rumored to never return. Underground, the child wakes up in the world of monsters, starting a journey to find a way back.

Here, the player meets Flowey the Flower—a talking flower who calls himself a guide in the underworld. Flowey initially appears friendly, teaching the player how to gain love through small white particles called friendliness pellets. However, within seconds, Flowey reveals his cruel nature when he reveals the true rule of this world: “In this world, either kill… or be killed.” This is the first moment that makes the player realize that Undertale is not just an adventure but also a test of morality.

Ruins Guardian

Soon after, a benevolent creature named Toriel appears and saves the child from Flowey. Toriel lives alone in the Ruins, where she cares for those who accidentally fall there.

She teaches the player how to solve ancient puzzles, how to use switches to open paths, and especially how to handle conflicts without violence. Through Toriel’s guidance, the game introduces a unique combat mechanic: instead of attacking, the player can act like they are talking, praising, or comforting their opponent to make them give up fighting.

Choices and Consequences

As the player goes deeper into the ruins, they begin to encounter different creatures like Froggit, Whimson, and Moldsmal. Each has its own personality—some are shy, some just want to be praised, and some show it through strange behavior.

Each battle is a small test: you can defeat your opponent to gain experience points or choose to forgive and gain “gold” but not level up. This decision affects not only how the characters react but also the entire game world.

Meet Napstablook, the Lonely Spirit

One of the most memorable scenes early in the game is when the player meets Napstablook, a sad ghost crying in the ruins. Instead of attacking, you can comfort or cheer it up. After a series of gentle interactions, Napstablook gradually becomes happier and even shows off the “Dapper Blook” hat it made for itself.

This moment clearly demonstrates the philosophy of Undertale: every creature has its own emotions and story, and sometimes kindness can change everything.

The Underground

The deeper the player goes, the more different areas they discover: from trap-filled corridors to ancient puzzle rooms to spider markets where food is made by spiders, for spiders, and for spiders. Each area contains small details that hint at the monster’s past—a world that once paralleled humanity, now locked in darkness.

Undertale is a unique indie RPG where every action of the player is remembered. The game combines innovative combat mechanics, a rich dialogue system, and a deep human message. You can choose to fight to survive or choose kindness to change the world. But no matter which path you take, Undertale will never forget what you did.
