Hapunan shares with you a horror story based on Filipino culture and urban legends. You play as Niko, a teenager who helps his father sell balut at night to make money and save the family home. But what begins as a quick way to earn some cash drags Niko into a spider web of deadly secrets. It starts with getting a business permit, meeting neighbours, hearing stories about Penduko and things slowly take a disturbing turn.
Hapunan doesn't kick off with non-stop horror; instead, it builds its narrative around the reality of Niko’s daily struggle to earn a living. Players must complete tasks, interact with local characters, and piece together what is happening. It is precisely these mundane, everyday activities that make the subsequent supernatural events stand out so starkly.
Niko’s first goal is straightforward: make enough money to get his family through tough times. But getting the permit and placating powerful locals slowly drags him into a much more dangerous situation.
As Niko digs deeper, he uncovers secrets involving the Barangay Captain, his associates, and a violent past. The name “Penduko” is also an important part of the mysteries the player has to solve.
Hapunan blends first-person exploration, environmental interaction, dialogue, and horror sequences. Player choices can influence the story's progression and the fates of the characters. Consequently, you must pay attention not only to what is right in front of you but also to dialogue and clues revealed throughout the game.
What makes Hapunan unique is the infusion of Filipino culture into horror. The image of a balut vendor at midnight, empty streets and folkloric elements make the game feel like it’s rooted in local life, as opposed to a generic horror setting.
