Cheat or Repeat is a game that appears simple at first glance, but once you dive in, you realize it captures a very true-to-life kind of tension: you are sitting in an exam room with the test paper right in front of you, yet your mind is a complete blank. Having done little to no preparation, the only way to pass is to... cheat.
However, the clever twist is that the game doesn't let you get away with it easily. Every time you pull out your phone or do anything out of the ordinary, the risk of being caught by the teacher skyrockets. Consequently, it’s not a lighthearted, fun-filled cheating simulator; instead, it feels more like a desperate struggle for survival in an incredibly strict classroom environment.
You take on the role of a student trapped in a grueling, multi-day exam marathon. There was no time to study, and no opportunity to start over. To pass, your only option is to find the answers during the exam itself, and try your absolute best not to get caught.
Each day of the exam presents a different level of difficulty. The teachers become increasingly irritable; they pace the room more frequently and scrutinize the students with greater intensity. It begins to feel as though the entire class, not just the teachers, is watching your every move.
The core mechanic of the game involves pulling out your phone to look up the answers. It sounds simple enough, but the catch is that you absolutely cannot let yourself be spotted. If the teacher happens to turn around at just the wrong moment, it’s game over.
You must constantly keep an eye on the teacher, where they are standing and how they are moving. There are brief, fleeting windows of opportunity for you to sneak in some work, but you have to anticipate the exact right moment to act.
Once you have the answer, you must immediately fill it in on your exam paper. Even a split-second delay can completely change the situation, forcing you to revert to evasion mode once again.
The true pressure in Cheat or Repeat doesn't stem from the difficulty of the tasks themselves, but rather from the persistent, gnawing sensation that you are constantly on the verge of being caught. At no point, during any action you take, are you ever truly safe. As the game progresses, the teacher becomes increasingly unpredictable, turning the act of cheating into a psychological battle: move too fast and you’ll get caught; move too slowly and you won’t finish in time.
Cheat or Repeat isn't long or complex, yet it generates a unique brand of tension, the specific kind of anxiety that comes from knowing you’re doing something wrong while desperately trying to avoid detection.
If you enjoy short, high-pressure games where a single wrong decision can lead to instant failure, this title is definitely worth a try. However, if you’re looking for something even more chaotic, featuring physics-based mayhem and a constant stream of hilarious deaths, then Short Life would be the perfect fit.
