Real Horror Stories is a Flash horror game that blends exploration, puzzle-solving, and jump scares. The game drops players into a dark forest where many have lost their lives. There are no clear instructions for each area; players must discover interactive points on their own and figure out what is happening.
The setting is ominous from the very beginning: a haunted house, a fire, an old woman appearing in the dead of nite, and the sound of a crying child. Some scenes may be quiet but if you interact with them, jump scares will come out of nowhere.
The journey continues with a series of bizarre visuals. Players encounter spiders and gruesome scenes. At times, something spreads across the screen; at others, a face or a hand suddenly appears. The game rarely explains events immediately, requiring players to observe every detail to determine their next move.
Many areas require specific actions. Sometimes you must light or maintain a fire; other times, you need to click on a precise spot on the screen. Some puzzles even require drawing symbols or connecting dots in a specific order. Since the game does not always indicate the next objective, players can easily get stuck on sections that seem deceptively simple.
Certain puzzles require memorizing shapes and the order in which they appear. One section involves right trapezoids and right-angled triangles; making the wrong choice can force you to restart the level. This adds tension, as jump scares can occur immediately after an action is performed.
The latter part of the game becomes increasingly unpredictable. Players encounter a circle with five demons dancing around it. And then there is a ritual, an altar and shadowy figures. Tension is built through the heavy use of loud sound effects.
At the end of Real Horror Stories, players need to complete a series of challenges to find an exit. A bad decision can lead to death, or force the player to repeat the last section. When he escapes, the forest and the monsters are memories now.
