A Long Way Home is a first-person horror game that plunges players into a vast, chilling, and mysterious gray space—where light isn't necessarily salvation, and darkness isn't necessarily the enemy.
You wake up in a nearly endless space: empty corridors, abandoned railway tracks, a cold room, and soulless gray walls. There's no clear explanation of who you are or why you're there—only a vague goal: finding your way home.
Surrounding you are mannequins standing silently in the darkness. They don't speak, they don't move noticeably… but they always give the impression of watching. Scattered notes reveal that many people have been trapped here before. They vanished, leaving echoes in the darkness.
The interesting thing is that players must balance using light for observation with conserving battery power. There are times when you are forced to turn off the lights and walk in the dim light, just to retain a little energy to survive.
The game is not simply about exploration and avoiding danger. Players must also solve puzzles based on notes they find.
For example, a sequence of numbers like 5 – 19 – 3 – 1 – 15 – 5, when converted alphabetically (A=1, B=2...), will form the word ESCAPE — a hint to unlock doors in the undefined space. These types of puzzles make the experience more intelligent and tense, as you're constantly paying attention to the smallest details.
Notes reveal that the souls of those who were once trapped still exist. They haven't completely vanished and may be trying to guide you in the right direction—or repeat their mistakes.
Mannequins appear everywhere, sometimes seemingly shifting when you're not looking. They create a constant feeling of being watched, even without overt jumpscares. This ambiguity is the game's strength: you're never sure you're being helped…or being lured into a trap.
A Long Way Home is an indie horror game focusing on liminal spaces, light and resource management, puzzle-solving based on hidden clues, and an isolated and mysterious atmosphere. Another scary game is The Library That Speaks; play it if you haven't had enough of the horror yet.
