Stillwater is a slow-paced horror-investigation visual novel that focuses on character psychology, family mysteries, and what lies hidden beneath the peaceful surface of a small town.

Players take on the role of Hugo Lauron, a private detective with a keen sense of unease. A seemingly ordinary morning is quickly disrupted when Nina Mortimer arrives at the office with an urgent request: she believes something is targeting her grandfather, and it must be resolved that very night.

Characters in Stillwater

  • Hugo Lauron: the main detective, calm but deeply disturbed, with a knack for sensing strange presences.
  • Noah: Hugo's colleague, open-minded and always acting as a balancing force.
  • Kobe: the loyal old dog, often reacts to things humans don't realize.
  • Nina Mortimer: the central character of the case, torn between reason, family, and the fear of being perceived as insane.
  • Henry Mortimer: the grandfather with an unusually youthful appearance, is the key to the entire tragedy.

Stillwater Gameplay

The game uses visual novel gameplay combined with environmental investigation. Players read dialogue, observe the setting, gather clues, and choose their course of action. Some segments allow movement between areas in the house to uncover items, letters, and unusual signs, thereby unlocking subsequent content.

The game has multiple endings, including a bad ending, depending on the player's decisions and level of curiosity.

Story and Atmosphere

At the heart of Stillwater is the Mortimer family – a wealthy family constantly plagued by strange losses. Unsent letters, traces of water appearing everywhere, the image of the eternally young grandfather, and the legend of the mermaid gradually intertwine.

Instead of explicitly explaining everything, the game lets players piece together the story themselves through:

  • Tense and emotionally charged dialogues
  • Environmental details such as paintings, handwritten letters, and old diaries
  • The contrast between the luxurious exterior of the house and the ever-present sense of unease within

Stillwater isn't just about the supernatural; it explores issues like loneliness, obsession, guilt, and irreversible choices. The horror doesn't come from constant jumpscares but from the player gradually discovering the truth behind distorted promises, memories, and love over time.

If you enjoy slow-paced, emotionally rich investigative stories that last a lifetime, Stillwater is a noteworthy experience—and from there, you can also continue exploring similar psychological mysteries in Silver Thread: Episode 3.
