Doki Doki! RainClouds is a mod for Doki Doki Literature Club that takes players into a different perspective than the original story. This is not simply a matter of adding a few extra details but a way to expand the experience, allowing you to embark on a completely new journey.
Instead of following the familiar narrative, RainClouds takes you into a different space, where every familiar situation seems to be re-enacted in a new light. Players will experience dialogue segments, club scenes and decisive choices, thereby creating a separate story.
Right at the beginning, the game throws you into a heavy monologue: Sayori wakes up, tired and wondering how she is living. Everyday actions—putting on her uniform, going to school, calling her friend Scrubpai—are all tinged with a fog of exhaustion.
Unlike the original, RainClouds not only retells the old story but also reveals Sayori's true thoughts in every moment. Players will clearly see her self-reproach, doubts about friendship, and even the moments when she has to force herself to appear happy in front of others.
Scrubpai—her childhood friend—now appears with a specific shape instead of just a shadow like before. But that presence does not bring comfort: in Sayori's eyes, every word he says and every frown becomes a constant worry.
Monika, Natsuki, and Yuri—familiar faces in the Literature Club—appear as pieces of peace that Sayori longs for. You will clearly feel the secret jealousy, the feeling of being abandoned when Scrubpai smiles with other girls, and the inferiority when Sayori compares herself to Natsuki or Yuri.
RainClouds doesn’t try to scare you like other horror mods, but instead takes you inside Sayori’s mind: the repetitive thoughts, the pretense of cheerfulness, the moments of self-loathing and being too tired to change clothes.
Every normal action—like eating a cupcake, writing a poem or inviting Scrubpai to the club—is pushed into an internal struggle. You’ll realize that what’s scary isn’t the jumpscare, but the silent loneliness and feeling like a burden that Sayori has to endure every day.
Doki Doki! RainClouds is a powerful and depressing experience for those who have played DDLC. It doesn’t add much new detail but instead chooses to amplify the sadness that already exists, turning the familiar story into Sayori’s living diary. If you’ve ever wondered what’s going on in Sayori’s head, this is the answer. If you like mystery and mind-bending horror games then don't miss Schoolboy Runaway: Home Escape.
