Class of '09: The Flip Side opens with a clear trigger warning, like a dangerous road sign ahead, yet it forces you to continue. The content is not only sensitive but goes further, touching on the dark corners of human behavior, where the line between humor and offensiveness is almost blurred.
This is not an easy game to digest. It's rough, gritty, and at times deliberately disorienting.
The game continues the familiar visual novel style of the original Class of '09, where every seemingly small decision has unpredictable consequences. But in The Flip Side, the sense of control is noticeably distorted. You no longer feel like you're choosing. You're simply reacting to increasingly illogical and overwhelming situations.
Dialogue comes at you like a barrage of bullets, giving you no time to process it.
The setting is still a 2008 school, but don't expect a typical teen story. Teachers can easily be manipulated. Students speak as if they're in an uncensored world. Topics like bullying and prejudice appear constantly, sometimes in extreme ways. Everything creates the feeling that this isn't a school, but a distorted version of reality, where values are completely turned upside down.
The game's biggest defining feature is its dark humor. You'll face situations that are shocking and unexpectedly funny.
Class of '09: The Flip Side is for those ready to step into a chaotic space where all norms are bent and nothing is softened to make it more palatable. But if you're curious about a gritty, fast-paced experience that gives you almost no time to breathe, then this is a journey worth trying, even if it's not pleasant.
And once you've gotten used to being thrown into uncontrollable situations, CloverPit will be the next step, where things continue to get weird in a very different way.
