Yume Nikki (literally translated as Dream Diary) is a classic indie game developed in RPG Maker 2003 by Japanese creator Kikiyama. The game was first released in 2004 and quickly became one of the biggest phenomena in the indie gaming community thanks to its minimalist yet haunting style.

Main character: Madotsuki

Players control Madotsuki, a girl who lives in a small room with only a desk, TV, diary, and bed.

  • When awake, she never steps outside the door.
  • When asleep, she enters the dream world—a surreal space with many doors leading to strange lands.

Madotsuki is a character of few words, with no specific description of her age or background, creating a sense of mystery.

Yume Nikki Gameplay

  • Explore the dream world: From the dream room (Nexus), players can go through 12 doors; each door opens a different universe.
  • Collect effects: There are a total of 24 effects, helping Madotsuki change his appearance or gain special skills to go deeper into the areas.
  • End: Once enough effects have been collected, the player returns them to the Nexus, opening the final scene of the game.
  • Special points: Yume Nikki has no dialogue and no clear instructions. The entire experience is left to the player to interpret.

Theme and images

  • Surreal, eccentric rooms.
  • Strange characters with unusual shapes.
  • The game frequently features symbols like eyes, hands, and peculiar bodies.
  • All of these suggest many thoughts about psychology, isolation and invisible fear but do not give specific explanations.

Yume Nikki is not an action game, nor is it a traditional horror game. It is a surreal, personal experience that everyone will have their own interpretation of. Discover the new game ULTRAKILL Prelude.
