NextDoor is a short pixel horror game inspired by the manga of Japanese master of fear Junji Ito. Based on the short story Mimi’s Ghost Story, the game faithfully recreates the unsettling, chilling feeling when the scariest thing is not in the dark but right behind the wall next to you.

NextDoor Game Story begins with a loud song

You play as a student trying to study but is constantly disturbed by loud music from the apartment above. Too frustrated, you decide to speak up. But when the door opens, you knock not just on a room but straight on the gate of the unusual.

A cold girl in all black opens the door. When you ask other neighbors, they also confirm that they have seen many different women living there — all dressed in black, different in appearance, but absolutely no one has ever said hello. They just stand there.

Strange things were gradually revealed

A neighbor suddenly disappears. A door opens. There's an enigmatic opening in the wall, which leads to the apartment next door. And an unusually long arm is reaching out from the darkness.

You realize that those women with different shapes may just be a single entity with the ability to change shape — and what's more horrifying is that they know you've discovered the truth.

A brilliant adaptation

Even though it only lasts about 10–15 minutes, NextDoor still gives players chills by building a dark atmosphere and creepy character movements. The sprites are simple but designed with depth: characters fold their arms, turn their heads, jump... all make you feel like you're living in a nightmare.

NextDoor instills fear in the most mundane of ways: a silent neighbor, thin walls, and the feeling of being watched in your own home. Try another horror game like The Prologue to Vermin God—if you’re still brave enough.
