Morris Heart is a retro horror-romance visual novel, following on from Melissa Heart in the Daytime Dating Sim series. While Melissa isn't required, it's easier to get a feel for the depth of the game if you've played it before.

In Morris, you play as a user testing a strange dating app on an old computer in a library — where the daytime software is testing a new installation package named Morris, the protagonist of this journey.

Morris Heart Story

You boot up the Daytime software, and are given the choice of dating a few different characters, but only Morris is on the right track. After a minor glitch, you find yourself transported to a small town where your car breaks down and is repaired by Morris himself — a quiet, poetic, and somewhat blushing mechanic.

The plot develops around the shady town, the quirky shop owners, and the feeling that Morris is hiding something. Not just real feelings, but also some weird coding in the program you're using. Between the blur of reality and simulation, is this a normal date?

Morris Heart Gameplay

  • Dialogue Choices: Like any visual novel, you navigate the story through dialogue choices. Making the wrong choices – like mocking Morris's poetry – can lead to a disastrous (and unsmoochable) ending.
  • Character Interactions: You'll meet and talk to many other characters in town, including garage owners Wes and Jonah, who seem to love Morris, but are also a little shady.
  • Poetry Allusions: The game features many poems written by Morris. These not only express the inner thoughts of the characters, but also hint at larger implications about the plot and the true nature of the game you're playing.

Features

  • Funny and creepy: Like Melissa, Morris Heart mixes humorous, innocent dialogue with confusing, confusing, and slightly creepy moments.
  • Meta horror genre: The game consistently defies expectations, leaving you perplexed about whether you're immersed in a straightforward romance game or drawn into something more sinister.
  • Classic interface design: The interface resembles an old operating system (Apple II, DOS), adding to the nostalgic and out-of-control feeling.
  • Oddly lovable protagonist: Morris is a bad boy with an artistic heart. The game develops the relationship between you and this guy in a sweet, adorable way, but also contains a sense of insecurity.

Morris Heart is a short, unusual, but unique experience, suitable for those who love visual novels with meta-horror elements. The game feels like you’re diving into buggy software, but instead of bugging the machine, it bugs the emotions.

If you enjoyed Melissa and found its unique storytelling captivating, Morris is an essential addition to your collection. If you like comedic horror games, Orchestrated Death is a worthy choice.
