Lakeview Cabin is a retro horror game that feels like an 80s horror movie. With non-linear gameplay and free exploration combined with puzzle solving and survival, the game brings a sense of suspense but is also full of appeal.
At first, the game makes you think that this is just a normal picnic. You control a group of characters, together going to a small cabin by the lake. There is food, there is drink, and there is a small dog following. There are no instructions. Everything is peaceful—until you realize that something is wrong.
This game is not a single game. It is a collection of different parts; each part is a separate creepy story, with different settings and characters. As you enter each door in the main area, you will be taken to scenes such as a haunted cabin, a ruined city or a strange film set.
They all have one thing in common: you have to find a way to survive while the environment around you becomes increasingly crazy.
Players can switch between multiple characters, carry items, solve puzzles, and sometimes… cause unexpected accidents. A character sawing wood can accidentally cut another person. A misplaced trap can cause you to fall into it. Even a seemingly gentle dog can get caught up in the bizarre vortex of things.
The game doesn't tell you what to do. There's no map, no specific instructions. You only have a few items around you, a few small hints, and the rest is up to your observation and trial and error. Survival isn't always a straightforward objective—at times, it may be necessary to consider who the true adversary is.
Players will experience many chaotic situations. At times, players may find themselves shedding garments and carrying an injured leg across the map. Occasionally, players must utilize their other leg to combat a masked assailant. Sometimes getting lost in rooms filled with strange devices and not understanding what they are used for.
This game differs significantly from typical horror games. It is funny, creepy, and challenges the player's intelligence and patience.
Lakeview Cabin is an indie horror game with its own style. It does not try to scare you with loud sounds or jumpscares. Instead, it creates a funny yet scary world where you decide each character's fate.
If you like games that are off the beaten path, somewhat eccentric and require curiosity, this will be an experience worth trying. Check out Alice is Dead 3 if you like horror games with multiple episodes.
