Shadow Tag is a terrifying game that puts you in a game of hide-and-seek with the dark. It starts out simple enough. You wake up in the dark, need to find your keys, get to your car, and leave the place.
At first, everything seems easy enough. open the door, but then…
Just when you think everything is over, a small, child-like creature suddenly appears at your doorstep. It doesn’t say anything in particular, just keeps repeating, “I want to play with you…”
And you begin to realize: this is no ordinary game. This is a chase where you are the prey, and the “child”—small ”as it may seem—is the scariest thing in the dark.
You need to collect gas, find a map, pick up the keys, and get back to your car—all while avoiding the creature. The creature unexpectedly emerges from behind trees, behind walls, and even behind you. You think you're safe, then you hear it say, "Why don't you want to play with me?"
And the worst part? Sometimes it's not just one. Sometimes it's a boy, sometimes it's a girl, and when both appear, it's chaos.
The more you play, the more you understand the rules: The game has a maze mechanism—the paths get more and more complicated. But when you understand the route and the movement of the "children," you will start to strategize your escape. However, there is always a feeling of being watched. There is no absolute hiding place. They always come back.
Shadow Tag brings a moderate feeling of horror, not too strong jumpscares, but enough to make the player startled when the little creature suddenly jumps out of the darkness. Although the "child" is not really fast, the way it always hovers near you is what makes the game scary.
You might ask, "Why hide-and-seek?" But perhaps it's precisely because of that—the pretense of innocence, the twisted simplicity—that Shadow Tag becomes a unique experience among the indie horror crowd. If you like familiar yet new horror games, Skibidi Escape: Backrooms is a suggestion.
