Poppy Office Nightmare is a horror game that brings players to a toy factory where a mysterious tragedy has occurred. Once there was color and laughter, now there is only a gloomy tunnel, the clanking of metal, and a huge green monster wandering around.
It’s a basic pursuit horror game, but the acoustics and tight environment manage to make for a scary atmosphere. Sometimes you haven't even seen Huggy Wuggy, but the sound of footfall at the end of the hallway is enough to make the player stop for a few seconds.
The main task is to explore the factory and find five lost toys. It sounds like a simple item-collecting game, but the problem is the monster is constantly moving around and can appear at any time. Each time you find an item, the feeling of relief is brief, because immediately afterward, the player must continue venturing into darker areas to complete the objective.
A notable aspect of the game is the use of sound as survival signals. Huggy Wuggy isn't the kind of monster that only appears with jumpscares. You'll often hear footsteps or sounds of movement from afar before it appears. As the game progresses, players tend to slow down and listen more instead of running continuously like at the beginning.
When detected, the game almost immediately switches to a chase. The factory corridors are quite narrow, so sometimes a wrong turn can lead to a dead end. The feeling of panic while running and trying to remember which door you opened last is what keeps the gameplay of Poppy Office Nightmare tense throughout.
Poppy Office Nightmare doesn’t really care for intricate riddles, but it does a great job of making you feel uncomfortable as you traverse tight rooms. You have to look for things while you escape a beast that can jump out at any moment from behind. The game is suspenseful all the time, from the beginning. If you’re still down with the sort of horror where you get chased around dark spaces, then Nextbot Horror is a moniker that’ll probably provide you a few more jump scares.
