I Was So Hungry is a horror game with an environmental narrative and an isolated and tense atmosphere. The game begins with Garfield, who has transformed into a creepy creature, devouring the entire house while you find yourself inside its belly.
The game is said to be inspired by a Garfield comic, but it is not light-hearted humor. This is a nightmare incarnate: Garfield has eaten the entire house, and now, you, as John or some other lost soul, are trying to escape by feeding him lasagna.
Each tray of lasagna you pick up is a step deeper into the living organs. With each feeding, the creature growls, squirms, and twitches, as if both happy and in pain. You are not sure if you are doing something good or helping something that should not exist.
Garfield is no longer a cat. He’s an ecosystem. You wander through living hallways, doors that close automatically, walls that are covered in fur, and everything that breathes. The questions are:
At just a few minutes of gameplay, I Was So Hungry doesn’t have any obvious jumpscares, but what makes it haunting is the environment design, the gooey soundtrack, and the way Garfield stares at you, gaping at you with his mouth full of lasagna.
A game that makes you ask not just “What is this?” but “Why am I playing this?”—and that’s the feeling that indie horror has always aimed for. If that strange emptiness lingers, The Best Gift There Is will take it further. Set during the holidays, it taps into the fear of being left behind—when everyone else has a place to be, except you.
