The Cursed Box is a supernatural horror and psychological horror visual novel with a yandere romance. We follow a young man, Lloyd, who opens an ancient wooden box that traps a mysterious creature, Casper. Following this, Lloyd’s life takes a turn into the bizarre. Casper is both terrifying and prone to teasing and flirting with him; yet, his true identity and past remain mysteries. Can Lloyd truly trust this strange companion?
Lloyd, an orphan from an early age, narrates the story. His grandmother raises him, and she believes strongly in spirits, curses, and other supernatural beings. Lloyd had believed the stories as a child, but as he grew older he started to see his grandmother as just another superstitious old woman like the others around him.
Lloyd thereon decides to take all his savings and buy an old house to begin a new life, whilst vacating painful memories behind when his grandmother died. It's a quaint old house. All is quiet until Lloyd explores the attic.
While cleaning, Lloyd discovers a dust-covered wooden box.Feeling inquisitive, he opens it up only not knowing that a prisoner is hiding out of sight. That nite, odd noises invade the house. A tall figure, with pale skin and white hair, with an enigmatic, unpredictable smile, appears.
He claims to be Casper. Casper tells us that Lloyd opened the box and freed him. Now he says Lloyd is his and he wants to serve him. Casper also threatens dire consequences if Lloyd refuses. Lloyd is left confused and terrified as he tries to figure out what to do with this unexpected visitor.
Casper is not your average citizen. He has no idea of who he is, how old he is, or where he came from. When Lloyd asks him questions, all he can do is give vague, evasive answers, or say that the time is not ripe to tell the truth.
Intrigued, Lloyd learns more about the box and its ancient legends. Answers may be found in a book belonging to his grandmother, but the more Lloyd finds out, the more he realizes he really does not know what lies beneath his roof.
Despite his intimidating appearance, Casper is deeply curious about human life. He watches Lloyd and Donald, who's always questioning him about his money and what he does all day. Casper also enjoys teasing Lloyd by suddenly flirting with him, resulting in an odd mix of humor and awkwardness between them.
And yet, the growing closeness between the pair doesn't do much to alleviate the sense of unease. Casper often stalks in silence, and his strange habit can easily rile Lloyd's temper. Lloyd slowly begins to open up to Casper, but he still can't quite trust him.
The Curse Box is a supernature mystery/slow-burn romance. Players uncover the secrets of the box and who Casper is, alongside Lloyd. Casper's forgotten past leaves many questions unanswered. With the romance: a game of being lonely, trusting someone, and fear of the unknown. One moment Casper can be soft-spoken, and the next moment Lloyd will feel uncomfortable. Players will have to get to know this relationship and the depths of his mysterious exterior.
