Tenebrosa Aranea is a short but intensely stressful first-person horror game. You play as a burglar breaking into the house of your recently murdered friend to steal money hidden in several safes. However, you're not alone. A mysterious entity constantly moves throughout the house, forcing you to listen to every door before entering if you don't want the break-in to end immediately.

Instead of relying on jump scares, the game builds fear through silence, sounds behind doors, and the feeling of never knowing what awaits in the next room.

Listen Before you Act

The most distinctive feature of Tenebrosa Aranea is its sound-based mechanism to pinpoint the location of the threat. Before each door, you must pause for a few seconds to listen for any sounds inside. A wrong decision to open a door at the wrong time could force you to start the entire money-collecting process all over again.

This keeps the gameplay incredibly tense. Even without seeing the monster, you constantly sense its presence through sounds and unexpectedly opening and closing doors.

Each Room is a Gamble

Safes are scattered throughout the house, each containing varying amounts of money. After opening a safe, you must collect the money before leaving, so rushing can easily lead you to miss out on the loot.

Furthermore, the secret codes that appear in each turn change randomly, forcing players to memorize or write them down if they want to discover the secret escape.

Two endings in Tenebrosa Aranea

The game has two different endings. The first ending simply requires you to collect enough money and leave the house safely. However, if you pay attention to the codes that appear during exploration and use them correctly, you can unlock the basement to activate the other ending.

The changing code between each turn makes finding the second ending more than simply memorizing the solution.

The terrifying atmosphere in Tenebrosa Aranea

Tenebrosa Aranea uses relatively simple low-poly graphics but makes extremely effective use of empty space, low light, and sound design.
The constant need to listen for doors, guess the monster's location, then rush in to steal the safe and retreat within seconds creates a prolonged sense of suspense. This isn't a horror game that relies on constant jumpscares, but rather puts pressure on the player each time they decide to open a door.

Tenebrosa Aranea Tips

  • Always listen before opening any door.
  • After opening the safe, don't forget to pick up the money inside before leaving.
  • Note down the code that appears in each turn because it changes randomly.
  • If monsters keep appearing in one area, move on to explore another room instead of waiting.

What's interesting about Tenebrosa Aranea is that it turns very ordinary actions like opening a door, listening to a sound, or picking up an object into a source of tension. Every decision feels like a gamble because one wrong move could mean starting all over again. Explore Conversations with Cannibals if you enjoy similar games.
