Without any intense chases or fights, Conversations with Cannibals puts you in an even more suffocating situation: injured, unable to escape, and forced to converse with a cannibal who is deciding whether you will become dinner or a new member of their community. Every answer is a gamble, as one wrong choice can end the conversation instantly.
The gameplay of Conversations with Cannibals revolves around selecting keywords that appear on the screen to navigate the conversation. Instead of choosing complete sentences, you must correctly piece together the ideas the other person wants to hear, thereby building trust or evoking empathy.
The unique aspect is that everything happens under time pressure. The energy bar of the stun gun is constantly recharged, meaning you only have a few seconds to read, reason, and make a decision. There's not much time for deliberation, so the ability to memorize old dialogues is just as important as understanding the meaning of each keyword.
Each failure isn't simply Game Over; it helps you understand more about the game's world. Conversations gradually reveal the survivor community with its elders, strict rules, and the belief that they are the last remaining part of humanity.
The opposing character isn't a simple villain either. He constantly reveals internal conflicts between loyalty to the community and empathy for you. Themes like Humanity, Narcy, Maverick, or Elders all influence the direction of the dialogue, forcing players to truly listen instead of just randomly choosing answers.
Unlike many typical visual novels, Conversations with Cannibals is designed for you to fail multiple times. After each playthrough, you'll remember more dialogue, understand the characters' personalities better, and gradually find a more logical sequence of choices.
Even Easier Mode only provides small hints instead of solving the puzzles immediately. This makes the feeling of overcoming the dialogue entirely dependent on the player's observation and memory skills.
Conversations with Cannibals proves that a conversation can create just as much pressure as any chase. With its multi-layered dialogue, time limit, and tense atmosphere, each attempt brings you closer to convincing the other person to change their fate.
