Deltarune begins with a mysterious voice asking you a series of questions about creating a “vessel” – the body you will assume. But the game immediately shatters that expectation by abandoning the character you just created, saying, “No one gets to choose who they are in this world.”

You play as Chris, a quiet student living with his adoptive mother, Toriel—a familiar character from Undertale. After arriving late to class, you are tasked with working with Susie—a rebellious and dangerous girl. The two of you go into the storage room to find chalk and are accidentally pulled into a parallel world—where darkness reigns, and light is the only hope.

Here, Chris, Susie, and a new character named Ralsei are informed that they are Lightners, people destined to close the dark portal and restore the balance between light and darkness.

Deltarune Gameplay

Deltarune retains Undertale’s unique combat style—a mix of traditional RPG and bullet-dodging elements—but adds a number of new mechanics:

  • Control a party of three: Chris, Susie, and Ralsei, each with their own skills and roles.
  • The Act system: Allows you to communicate, make peace, or convince enemies to avoid combat.
  • The unchangeable fate theme: Unlike Undertale, your choices in Deltarune will not affect the outcome.
  • The world is more beautifully designed and deeper: The visuals, music, and areas are all more meticulously crafted.

Deltarune Tips

  • Limit combat: The Act system allows you to resolve situations without attacking. This helps develop relationships within the party, especially with Susie.
  • Explore Everything: Toby Fox often hides many small details and easter eggs in dialogue, objects, and descriptions. These can provide important clues about the plot.
  • Consider your actions: While you can’t change fate, how you interact with characters like Susie, Ralsei, or Lancer will affect how they react and what emotions they express.
  • Listen to the music: Deltarune’s music is not only beautiful but also an effective storytelling tool. Some melodies remind you of Undertale or hint at something about the future.

Is Deltarune related to Undertale?

Although it features many familiar characters like Toriel, Sans, Asriel, etc., Toby Fox confirmed that Deltarune is not a sequel to Undertale. This is a parallel universe. You can’t use old saves from Undertale, and the rules of the world are completely different.

Deltarune brings everything players loved about Undertale—the great music and memorable characters—while also improving the gameplay, graphics, and storytelling. If you loved Undertale, this game will feel both familiar and fresh. If you love the horror genre, you will definitely enjoy Mom is Gone.
